Epi #72. Expert Tips for Working Parents Navigating Back-to-School Time: A Gentle Parenting Approach
23:56

As summer break winds down and the back-to-school season looms, working parents across the globe are feeling the tug of new responsibilities, shifting schedules, and the ever-present desire to parent gently.

This time of year can be especially challenging if you're aiming to build a loving, fun, and connected home, free from punishments and filled with open communication.

If you're a working parent feeling overwhelmed, burned out, and fearful of what the transition might bring, you're not alone. Here are some expert tips designed to resonate with your struggles and desires as you embark on this new season.

1. Building Connection and Trust

  • Morning Cuddles or Encouraging Words: Start the day with a quick cuddle or encouraging words to set a positive tone.
  • Evening Check-ins: Share the day's highlights and listen to your children's experiences without judgment.

2. Preparing a Stress-Free Morning Routine

  • Involve Your Children: Let them choose outfits and breakfast menus.
  • Gentle Reminders: Use gentle reminders. These could be sticky notes, visual calendars or just verbal prompts to encourage your children to follow their routine.

3. Fostering Open Communication

  • Scheduled Talks: Carve out time for open conversations about school, friendships, and feelings. As a working parent, these conversations could happen on the way to or from school or during the weekend.
  • Model Empathy: Show them you understand their fears and excitement about the new school year.

4. Balancing Work and Parenting

  • Share Calendars: Let your children know when you'll be busy with work so they feel included and respected.
  • Quality Time: Schedule undisturbed family time to nurture your connection. For working parents, sometimes it’s hard to separate work and family time; if that is your case, you can set boundaries around your work-life balance, maybe you put your working hours, or you can separate your workspace from your family space.

5. Applying Gentle Discipline Strategies

  • Discipline without harm: to discipline our children without hurting their confidence or risking our relationship with them, it’s important to remember to teach a lesson. At the same time, emotions are heightened and don’t usually end well. It’s ok to pause and take care of your needs first; for example, if you are coming from work, take a moment to relax, and then later, you can address the behavioral concerns your nanny might have reported. This way, you can have a better chance of disciplining your children with compassion.

The eBook Discipline Without Harm contains game-changing discipline tools to teach positive behavior to your children.

  • Conflict Resolution: Teach them peaceful ways to solve disagreements with siblings or friends.

6. Leaning on a Supportive Community

  • Find Your Tribe: Connect with other gentle-parenting families for support. You can find other working parents in the community that you trust and schedule babysitting swaps so you both get a day of rest.
  • Hire Help If Needed: Consider professional help to ease the daily load without compromising your parenting values.

7. Prioritize Your Well-being

  • Self-Care Rituals: Recharge with activities that nurture your soul. That could be early morning yoga before the kids wake up or journaling after bedtime.
  • Emotional Awareness: Recognize triggers from your childhood that may affect your reactions.
